Job Description:

Role Overview

The Junior Assets Engineer supports bp Southern Africa’s retail asset safety and integrity agenda by helping turn operational risk insight into practical action. The role contributes to the systematic reduction of asset integrity, operational, and major accident risks, including Loss of Primary Containment (LOPC), through data analysis, incident learning, action tracking, and close collaboration with key technical and operational stakeholders.

Working closely with HSSE, Maintenance, Engineering, Construction, Dealers, and Contractors, the Junior Assets Engineer helps maintain robust safety barriers, improve compliance, strengthen asset integrity performance, and support safe and reliable operations across the retail network.

Key Accountabilities

HSSE and Asset Integrity Risk Analysis

Collect, validate, and analyse asset integrity and HSSE data, including LOPC indicators, to identify trends, emerging risks, and improvement opportunities across the retail network.

Translate data insights into clear problem statements, practical recommendations, and risk-based priorities for the Assets Integrity Engineer and relevant stakeholders.

Incident Learning and Root Cause Support

Support incident and near-miss investigations by gathering evidence, reviewing facts, analysing causal factors, and contributing to root cause assessments in line with required standards.

Track corrective and preventive actions through to closure, verify effectiveness where required, and help embed lessons learned to prevent recurrence and reduce operational risk.

Stakeholder Engagement and Action Tracking

Work with Maintenance, HSSE, Construction, Design and Engineering, Dealers, and Contractors to coordinate agreed risk-reduction actions and support consistent execution of safety-critical controls.

Maintain clear action trackers, including owners, due dates, status updates, supporting evidence, and escalation points, to ensure actions are completed and sustained.

Standards, Benchmarking and Continuous Learning

Research and benchmark asset integrity and retail safety practices across bp’s global operations and relevant industry sources, identifying applicable good practices for local implementation.

Support the development and refresh of guidance documents, templates, and basic training materials to help sites apply standards consistently and strengthen barrier and compliance performance.

Continuous Improvement and Operational Excellence

Identify improvement opportunities through data trending, audits, incident reviews, and stakeholder feedback.

Support the Assets Integrity Engineer in prioritising and implementing initiatives that reduce asset risk, improve performance, and strengthen safe operating practices across the retail network.

Monitor agreed improvement plans, milestones, owners, and benefits, and contribute to KPI reporting that demonstrates progress and sustained performance.

Reporting, Systems and Data Quality

Prepare and maintain reports, dashboards, and summaries covering asset safety performance, LOPC risk indicators, trends, priority actions, and progress updates for stakeholder review.

Support the upkeep and improvement of asset integrity registers, inspection records, action trackers, and supporting systems by applying data standards, improving information quality, and ensuring traceability of evidence for audits and assurance activities.

Strong analytical skills, with the ability to review data, identify trends, support basic statistical analysis, and prepare clear reporting outputs.

Working knowledge of root cause assessment, incident learning, corrective action tracking, and risk-based problem solving.

Good proficiency in Excel and reporting tools, with the ability to support dashboards, trackers, summaries, and performance reports.
