Role Overview

The Lights Trading Commercial Lead is a hands-on role offering deep exposure to bp’s trading business. Demonstrating a strong understanding of a complex global trading book, you will establish effective relationships across regions and functions to deliver commercial value. The role provides a strong platform for progression into future leadership or senior individual contributor roles across commercial or interfacing group functions.

About the Role

The Commercial Lead works closely with a team of commercial analysts to ensure accurate and timely deal collection and T0 exposure reporting within bp’s systems of record for the Lights trading desk, enabling critical commercial activity for traders.

You will bring technical expertise to the on-bench trading analysts’ team, supporting traders in monetizing value through structured trading activities. This includes acting as the subject matter expert for complex exposure topics, overseeing post-deal management for sophisticated transactions, and providing analytical support for live origination, new business initiatives, and system or business integrations.

A key aspect of the role is developing commercial analyst capability and driving sustained improvements in team performance.

The role is based in Singapore and reports to the Lights Commercial Manager. You will work closely with regional traders, support functions, and commercial peers across Chicago, Singapore, Houston, London, and ST&S RSOs.

Key Accountabilities

Accountabilities are supported by RPTAP traders and include:

  • Deliver best-in-class support across exposure management activities for the Lights desk, driving analyst execution of bench strategy and alignment with functional leads
  • Own daily exposure management for assigned portfolio(s), acting as the primary critical issue point for book leads
  • Partner with the Commercial Capability Manager (CCM) to identify development needs within the analyst team and deliver appropriate support, including onboarding and training of new joiners, with potential progression into formal line management responsibilities
  • Support analysts in delivering daily exposure reporting, T0 P&L, and other commercial activities in line with bench strategy
  • Oversee issue resolution within T0 validation and Follow-the-Sun handover processes, ensuring compliance with standard methodologies and internal policies
  • Champion continuous improvement initiatives to simplify and streamline processes across Front Office, Commodity Risk, and adjacent functions
  • Provide coverage support across the analyst team as required and act as lead cover for allocated books
  • Collaborate with the CCM and analysts to implement and embed new ways of working across the team
  • Act as a role model for professional standards within the Lights exposure team, with a strong focus on compliance, clear communication, and professional conduct

Essential Experience and Requirements

  • Experience in commodity trading, gained in a trading, commercial analyst, or commodity risk role
  • Strong understanding of commodity markets, trading strategies, value generation, and risk management
  • Solid technical knowledge of physical trading strategies
  • Proven ability to resolve complex commercial issues using sound judgement
  • Dedicated with strong prioritization, organizational, and execution skills
  • Excellent interpersonal and partner management skills in a fast-paced trading environment
  • Strong sense of ownership and accountability, with commitment to team wellbeing and safety
  • Prior experience managing or developing junior talent (e.g., interns or graduates)
  • Proactive, solutions-oriented attitude with a track record of solving business problems
  • Existing knowledge and/or experience supporting Lights RPTAP products is strongly preferred
