bpx Apprenticeship Program

Choose an apprenticeship at bp and you will receive best-in-class training and work alongside highly experienced technicians using the latest equipment and technology.

Phase 1: Technical Education


A two-year associate degree in Process Technology, Petroleum Technology, or Instrumentation. This phase provides the opportunity to build familiarity with bpx operations.

Phase 2: Onboarding and Immersion


In‑person onboarding held in Texas, providing hands‑on, immersive training to support skill development and reinforce the high‑touch, apprenticeship‑style learning experience central to bpx’s field programs. An introduction to bpx, including safety training and initial technical training.

Phase 3: On-the-Job Training


Three to six months of job rotations and mentoring by experienced technicians, with assessments to determine job placement readiness.

Technician Apprentice Job Description

We are seeking a highly motivated, adaptable, mechanically inclined individual with a growth mindset who enjoys a dynamic, hands-on, field-based work environment. The successful candidate will have a strong desire to enter the energy industry and will be assigned a three‑ to six‑month rotation in one of our best-in-class business units. Your technician rotation will be determined by bpx and may include one of the following roles:

  • Instrument Technician (I&E)
  • Electrical Technician (I&E)
  • Plant Technician
  • Maintenance Technician
  • Production Technician

Work Shifts and Schedules

  • bpx onshore apprenticeship positions: Rotational – 14 days on / 14 days off or 8 days on / 6 days off
  • Upon a successful apprenticeship graduation at bpx energy: Additional rotational options may be available, including 14 days on / 14 days off, 8 days on / 6 days off, or Monday–Friday schedules.

Key Responsibilities and Behaviors

  • With guidance from bp technicians, learn to deliver safe, compliant, reliable operations by meeting bp’s HSE and Operating Discipline expectations.
  • Follow work management processes to perform preventative maintenance, monitor equipment, and provide quality detail and feedback to ensure operations remain within parameters.
  • Optimize plant, asset, or equipment performance, and raise optimization opportunities to senior technicians or site leadership.
  • Adapt optimally to changing work conditions, demands, delays, or unexpected events.
  • Safely and efficiently complete operating tasks (operations routines, SOPs, basic care, etc.) and ensure compliance with regulatory requirements.
  • Use analytical and critical‑thinking skills to leverage data and resources to resolve field issues.
  • Maintain awareness of site risks and alert site leadership of any emerging concerns.
  • Actively contribute to continuous improvement and team culture.
  • Demonstrate high aptitude and curiosity about new technologies that enhance facility reliability.
  • Communicate clearly, learn quickly, and adapt to new information.
  • Exhibit strong listening and interpersonal skills with an inquisitive and confident approach.

Critical Role Demands

Postural Demands:


Ability to move through a full range of motion, including working from ground level to overhead, and safely perform tasks involving awkward postures such as bending, twisting, stooping, kneeling, and squatting.

Dexterity Demands:


Strong finger dexterity and hand‑eye coordination. Ability to safely use one or both hands while handling materials and using tools for maintenance and repair.

Carrying and Lifting Demands:

Carry 50lbs with 2 hands at self-selected height: 50 lbs for a distance of 50 feet x 2; self-paced.

Lift with 2 hands from floor to waist: 50 lbs x 2

Lift with 2 hands from floor to shoulders: 20 lbs x 2

Lift with 2 hands from floor to crown: 20 lbs x 2

Desirable Criteria & Qualifications

  • Degree from an accredited Process Technology or Instrumentation Program, a relevant associate degree, or extensive experience in maintenance and operations in automation, instrumentation, and electrical systems.
  • Minimum cumulative GPA of 2.5 in a Process Technology or Instrumentation Program.
  • Passion for using digital tools and data to improve operations and production.
  • Proven problem‑solving experience with measurable results.
  • Graduation date of May 2026 (two‑year associate degree in Process Technology, Petroleum Technology, or Instrumentation).
  • All coursework must be completed by May 2026.

Salary

We offer a reward and wellbeing package built to support your life and work.

Base pay range: $60,000 – $80,000
This range represents a good‑faith estimate of possible base compensation at the time of posting.
