Role Purpose
The Senior Ethanol Trader will be responsible for the commercial management and trading of ethanol produced by bp’s 11 owned mills in Brazil, while also leading third-party origination and domestic and international trading activities, including proprietary trading, exports and imports.
This role sits at the core of bp bioenergy’s ethanol trading platform, requiring strong market insight, risk management rigor, and close integration with logistics, analytics, and the sugar trading team.

Key Accountabilities
• Commercialization of bp ethanol production
• Lead the sale of ethanol volumes produced by bp’s 11 owned mills.
• Optimize sales channels between domestic market, exports, hedging, and alternative outlets.
• Develop and implement pricing strategies aligned with market conditions and risk appetite.
• Third-party origination
• Originate ethanol from third parties, including mills, distributors, and traders.
• Structure commercial agreements and manage counterparty relationships.
• Assess credit, contractual, and operational risks.
• International trading
• Implement ethanol exports and imports when arbitrage opportunities arise.
• Evaluate international parity, logistics costs, FX exposure, and regulatory constraints.
• Coordinate with global trading counterparts when applicable.
• Trading & risk management
• Apply sound trading principles across physical, arbitrage, and proprietary trading activities, including:
• Pricing models and forward curves
• Risk management and exposure monitoring
• Correlation analysis (ethanol vs sugar, oil, FX, CBIOs, gasoline, etc.)
• Proactively manage market, basis, and liquidity risks.
• Support hedge strategies in alignment with bp’s governance and limits.
• Arbitrage & market analysis
• Identify and implement domestic and international arbitrage opportunities, including proprietary trading strategies within approved risk frameworks.
• Understand and monitor regulatory frameworks affecting ethanol markets.
• Leverage analytics to support commercial and trading decisions.
• Cross-functional collaboration
• Work closely with:
• Logistics – freight, storage, terminals, and execution feasibility
• Analytics – market intelligence, pricing tools, and reporting
• Sugar trading team – cross-commodity insights, correlations, and optimization
• Contribute to an integrated bioenergy trading strategy.
Experience & Qualifications
• Extensive experience in ethanol trading, commercialization, origination, and/or proprietary trading.
• Strong background in:
• Trading and risk management
• Pricing methodologies and market structures
• Domestic and international arbitrage
• Solid understanding of:
• Brazilian ethanol market dynamics
• Regulations, taxes, and compliance
• Logistics and supply chain constraints
• Proven ability to operate in fast-moving, high-responsibility trading environments.
• Strong analytical perspective combined with commercial judgment.
• Excellent communication and partner management skills.
