Job Description:

bp Cherry Point Refinery is currently accepting applications for summer positions in the Maintenance Shops. Maintenance interns will be involved in assisting maintenance work associated with the production of refining oil, gas, and renewables.

The work schedule is four 10-hour days Monday - Thursday, starting at 6:30 a.m. and ending at 5:00 p.m.

Wage is $33 per hour.

The internship will begin on June 29, 2026, and finish August 20, 2026

Cherry Point Maintenance is split into three shops, please designate on your resume which shop you prefer. Successful interns will be assigned to one of the following areas;

Machine Shop - Repairs and maintains steam turbines, pumps, electric motors, industrial compressors and other refinery equipment.

Instrumentation & Electrical (I&E) Shop - Repairs and maintains instrumentation, analyzers, logic controls, and power infrastructure for the refinery.

General Shop - Maintains and repairs/replaces piping, valves, fixed equipment, welding, lifting and crane operations.

Ideal candidates will:

  • Possess a TWIC Card prior to the first day of work. FYI this can take a few months in some cases. Successful candidates will have their TWIC fees refunded by bp.

  • Must be enrolled in a continuing educational program with mechanical or industrial focus.

  • Have verbal and written communication skills, mechanical aptitude, interest in repairing and improving rotating / mechanical equipment.

  • Ability to climb ladder and stairs.

  • Safely work indoors and outdoors in changing weather conditions.

  • Ability to stand and walk, lift and carry up to 30 lbs., bend and stoop, twist and reach, push and pull, kneel and crawl, and use hands and feet.

Onboarding includes;

  • Drug screening – this will be a hair follicle test for pre-employment, including cannabis. Note that CBD or THC may be found in hair for up to 12 months.

  • Medical assessment

  • Background check

  • PPE fitting

Expectations include:

  • Work safely and effectively with team members to achieve reliability and production goals consistent with site health, safety, security, and environmental procedures.

  • Demonstrate the appropriate standard of care for refinery personnel and equipment.

  • Be observant and improvement focused with the courage to speak up and ask questions.

  • Be self-motivated and accountable for achieving day-to-day tasks and long-term goals.

  • Work from equipment drawings and follow shop/refinery procedures.

  • Participate in troubleshooting and root cause analysis of equipment failure.

Successful candidates will need to work with the recruiting team to complete the onboarding process prior to starting work. This process will require candidates to report to our site at least once to complete required tasks.
