In 2025, we established a new Legal Solution Team based in Kuala Lumpur (KL), which is an integral part of the Legal Function and provides defined, structured shared legal services to the bp business. The implementation of the Legal Solution Team marks the transformation of the legal team structure and is successfully improving the way we deliver legal services, with much more agility and efficiency, in a data-driven, technology-enabled environment. This is an opportunity to join a team that is significantly expanding as it seeks to bring its continuous improvement ethos to additional workstreams beyond Procurement.
The Legal Solution Team is located in one of bp’s global centers in Bangsar South (Kuala Lumpur) with the aim of benefiting from local talent and creating an opportunity to develop the next generation of legal talent.
Where the Legal Counsel position fits into the team
Part of the bp Legal Solutions Team – a team of 8-10 colleagues.
Integral part of BP’s Legal Function - a global operation consisting of approximately 400 lawyers and specialists.
Based in one of bp’ global centres in KL – a wider team of 1,800 that powers BP’s strategy through premier business operations enabled by technology and innovation.
The Legal Solutions Team provides contracting legal support to bp’s Procurement function, supporting staff in Sunbury, Houston, Budapest and KL and other global locations.
We are expanding the Legal Solutions Team to handle a huge variety of work across a number of work streams, supporting some of bp’s most exciting projects in a variety of areas, like oil & gas, marketing & convenience and corporate activities.
This role will initially report to the Managing Counsel of the Legal Solution Team located in KL (Bangsar South).
Key Accountabilities
Working in partnership with lawyers in our upstream (production and operations); customers & products; and treasury teams to deliver commercially focused advice on a variety of commercial and advisory work streams.
Delivering legal support to bp’s Procurement in relation to global procurement and contracting activity. Advising, reviewing, negotiating, drafting and providing business-minded, pragmatic legal advice on bp’s goods and services contracts. Providing other ad-hoc support to bp’s Legal Function.
Managing legal and other issues, intercollaborating withr lawyers across bp to ensure that their requirements for support are appropriately managed.
Engagement of external legal counsel where required.
Driving standardization and CI of contract templates, playbooks, Ways of Working, workflows, processes and training materials.
Collaborating with the broader legal team on the transition of work to the Legal Solutions Team.
Collecting and analysing data during completion of work and support bp’s Legal Function’s initiatives on transformation, digitalization, standardization, and innovation.
Find opportunities for efficiencies and to improve current contracting processes and devise plans to implement these changes.
Supporting the update of bp’s template goods and services contracts and other business contracting processes
Delivering contracting training sessions to affected businesses and legal teams.
Working with senior legal and business partners to provide direct support for business critical and high-value projects.
Creating and fostering relationships within the wider bp network, including legal and operational subject matter experts, in order to provide comprehensive and commercially appropriate advice.
Delivering against Key Performance Indicators which could include SLA compliance and turnaround time.
Essential Education:
Has been called to the Malaysian Bar or is qualified to practice law in the UK, Australia or US or any other major jurisdiction.
Essential Experience and Job Requirements:
Minimum 3-10 years PQE as a practicing commercial lawyer in a law firm or in a corporate legal group.
Experience in negotiating and drafting cross-border commercial agreements in a wide variety of business areas.
Excellent technical legal, oral, written and communication skills in English language.
Strong presentation skill of legal materials and proven experience.
Strong interpersonal skills – capable of adopting a variety of styles to interact with and influence clients across the business and senior management.
A pro-active, continuous-improvement attitude.
Strong time management and prioritization capabilities.
Ability to deploy good judgment in pragmatically and effectively applying bp practices, processes and controls.
Well-developed emotional intelligence, with sensitivity to cultural and people differences, receptive to and energised by a diverse organization, always seeking to maintain wellbeing within our organization.
Ability to work both autonomously and as a teammate in a global function.

Desirable criteria
Experience in:
Spearheading continuous improvement initiatives.
delivering shared legal services either in an in-house or outsourced environment.

the oil and gas industry/treasury-related transactions.
The ability to provide legal advice/negotiate in non-English languages.
