About bp

Our purpose is to bring together people, energy, and markets to power and navigate a changing world. In a time of rapid change and new opportunities, we look for talented individuals who thrive on expertise, innovation, and teamwork. We continue to advance digital solutions, balanced outcomes, and collaboration across our business — and you can be part of that journey as we grow as a leading energy company.

About the Role: Seismic Operations Geophysicist

bp’s Global Subsurface Solutions (GSS) delivers high-quality subsurface products supporting bp’s oil, gas, and low-carbon portfolios. Within this, the Seismic Delivery team plays a critical role in enabling safe, efficient, and technically robust geophysical operations — from traditional hydrocarbon development to near-surface and ultra-high-resolution surveys.

As a Seismic Operations Geophysicist in the Eastern Hemisphere Seismic Delivery Team, you will help design, plan, and deliver seismic data acquisition projects in alignment with bp’s Management of Geophysical Operations (MoGO). A key part of the role includes providing HSSE leadership for UK-managed field activities, ensuring strong contractor engagement, risk management, and consistent delivery of safe and high-quality operations. You will collaborate closely with colleagues in Sunbury, Houston, and global subsurface teams.

What You Will Deliver

  • Support the design, planning, and execution of global geophysical operations, ensuring activities meet technical, safety, and budget expectations.

  • Build strong relationships with seismic contractors to support safe, efficient, and high-quality project delivery.

  • Track emerging technologies that enhance operational efficiency, data quality, and carbon performance.

  • Work with subsurface, operations, and supply chain teams to define technical requirements and evaluate contractor services.

HSSE responsibilities include:

  • Participating in MoGO-aligned risk assessments, supplier evaluations, and contractor reviews.

  • Supporting oversight contractor training and competency verification (e.g., Barrier Strength Verification).

  • Conducting HSSE and equipment audits and ensuring timely closure of contractor actions.

  • Contributing to continuous improvement in operational safety and performance.

What You Will Need to Be Successful

Qualifications

  • MSc or BSc in geophysics or related field.

  • Basic offshore safety training (BOSIET).

  • NEBOSH or equivalent HSE certification (preferred).

Experience & Skills

  • 5–10 years’ experience in geophysical field operations and/or seismic HSSE.

  • Experience in project delivery, contractor and supplier management, and multidisciplinary collaboration.

  • Practical geophysical operations experience (marine streamer, OBN/node, ROV, transition zone, or land).

  • Strong communication, teamwork, presentation, and interpersonal skills.

  • Familiarity with HSSE systems, risk assessments, contractor oversight, and safety improvement.

  • Ability to travel internationally (~25%).

  • Motivation to support safe field operations and further develop HSSE capability.

Good to Have (Can Be Developed On the Job)

  • Broader experience with onshore/offshore acquisition methods, survey design, and operational planning.

  • Experience working with integrated subsurface teams (geoscience, reservoir characterization, reservoir management).

  • Awareness of emerging technologies for efficient, low-carbon seismic operations.

  • Ability to coach, influence, and support operational leaders.

  • Strong skills in preparing clear technical or HSSE materials.

  • Familiarity with safety management systems and continuous improvement processes.
