The role of Senior Manager Structured & Trade Finance is a key leadership role within bp’s Supply, Trading & Shipping (ST&S) Finance & Risk organisation. This role plays a critical lead in the delivery of complex trade and structured finance solutions that enable ST&S growth, often in higher-risk markets and geographies requiring integrated financing structures and robust credit mitigation.
As a senior leader, you will supply to bp’s ST&S strategic direction by driving execution of risk cover and liquidity transactions and developing and structuring customized solutions in partnership with credit, trading, and origination teams. You will also establish, build and lead enduring relationships with financial institutions, insurers and counterparties, negotiating innovative financing and risk mitigation arrangements.
Reporting to the VP Structured Trade Finance and part of the Global Structured Trade Finance team, this role demands regional agility, significant leadership, alignment with local market dynamics and partnership across global teams to ensure bp’s trading business remains driven and resilient, with a primary focus on the Refined Products & Trading (RPT) and Gas Power Trading International business (GPTI) in Eastern Hemisphere.
Key Accountabilities
- Drive the structuring, negotiation and execution of sophisticated funding and risk cover solutions with internal and external partners in support of commercial value for the RPT and GPTI business. Handle and guide the regional team of specialists across the Eastern Hemisphere, ensuring timely execution and alignment with regional priorities and global standards. Solutions include trade credit insurance, receivable purchase agreements, risk participation agreements, prepayments, transfer-of-ownership transactions, and other non-debt arrangements.
- Develop and implement customized solutions to improve trading capabilities and generate additional P&L. Champion innovation in trade finance and working capital optimisation.
- Support growth in emerging markets and regional hubs through proactive engagement and tailored solutions.
- Maintain silent running of ST&S funding and credit risk mitigation activities through maintenance, improvement and/or development of robust processes and controls.
- Build and sustain strong relationships with banks, funds and insurers. Identify and develop new relationships to expand credit risk mitigation and funding options for the RPT and GPTI business.
- Develop seamless collaboration across the business, including Trading, Origination, Credit, Treasury, Legal and other functional teams.
Essential Experience and Job Requirements
- Proven ability in commodity finance, with a consistent track record in structuring and implementing funding and credit risk distribution solutions within a commercial / investment bank or an energy trading environment.
- Strong knowledge of the legal concepts and non-debt accounting treatment underpinning trade and commodities finance.
- Specialist expertise in some of or all the following: prepayments, PXFs, RBLs, ABLs, project finance, receivables securitisation, receivable discounting, supply chain financing, inventory financing, trade credit insurance, credit structuring, risk syndication and letters of credit.
- Ability to design capital-efficient solutions aligned with trading strategies.
- Demonstrated leadership in deal origination and negotiation, financial structuring, legal documentation, risk distribution/syndication and/or working capital management.
- Self-directed performer, comfortable operating in a fast-paced, multifunctional trading environment; adaptable and solution-orientated.
- Strong people leadership skills with a proven track record in leading teams and delivering against bp’s Leadership Expectations - by promoting and role-modelling bp’s values and behaviours; building enduring interpersonal and people capabilities; energising staff by setting clear direction and boundaries; and bringing value by delivering against short and long-term commitments.
- Strength and experience coordinating and leading sophisticated team agendas, deals and processes from inception through to execution, including the ability to balance multiple priorities and deliver in complex ecosystem.
- Excellent interpersonal and influencing skills across all organisational levels.
- Keen interest in keeping up to date in funding and risk distribution markets, energy/low carbon industry and geo-political impacts.
- Sophisticated understanding and experience around physical and financial gas or oil trading activities and strategies; proficiency in Microsoft Suite, Power BI and familiarity with FinTech solutions supporting trade finance.
- Entrepreneurial mentality with a commitment to continuous improvement and innovation.
Desirable Experience and Education
- Deep understanding of fundamental credit drivers – particularly for stressed and distressed counterparties, including an understanding of collateral protections and bankruptcy law dynamics / experience in restructuring debt.
- Familiarity with credit portfolio management theory and practice and/or secondary credit markets.
- Specialist experience with oil and refined products trading with consistent track record to structure complex deals and handle risk across multiple jurisdictions.
- Law degree or legal experience in banking and commodities finance; knowledge of various legal frameworks is an asset.
