About Fuels & Low Carbon Technology: Fuels and Low Carbon Technology is s team of over 300 technologists, scientists and engineers who provide pioneering solutions to support bp’s Fuels, Refining, Bioenergy and Hydrogen businesses. We also support the Technology group through Innovation Management, Modelling, Digital Sciences and our academic research programmes.
The Bioenergy & Hydrogen Technology team (B&HT) will bring together scientists and engineers dedicated to delivering low carbon energy solutions that align with bp’s strategy while also supporting the technological needs of our oil and gas projects. The team works across bp’s businesses supporting areas such as novel feedstocks, biofuels and advanced biofuels, and hydrogen.
About the role:
The Scale-Up team in Bioenergy & Hydrogen Technology develop, de-risk and scale up novel processes in the bioenergy and hydrogen value chains. This is a senior role within Scale-Up, to provide technical leadership across bp especially in the field of thermodynamics and physical properties. Your line manager will be the India Engineering Manager, and you will be a part of the multidisciplinary engineering and science team based in our Bengaluru office, India.
What you will deliver:
- Leader by example through safe and compliant operations, contributing to the development of a strong HSSE culture, including psychological safety.
- Lead purposeful process design, development and modelling work that clearly supports programme outcomes, peer review other programmes, and communicate results effectively to diverse customers.
- Represent bp in internationally leading consortia and joint industry projects, challenging and steering research, and bring these insights and challenges back into bp.
- Develop and manage the company's physical property data capabilities
- Build positive relationships with bp's businesses and engineering teams to identify high-impact thermodynamics and physical properties challenges, to provide targeted advice and underpin future programmes.
What you will need to be successful (experience and qualifications)
- A PhD in thermodynamics modelling, thermal/transport property measurement or related fields with a strong grasp of the underlying fundamentals, or demonstration of equivalent experience – likely min. 12 years of professional experience
- Experience in scaling new process technologies from early experiments through to pilot / demonstration scale operations, focussing on key technical and commercial risks.
- Deep understanding of risk analysis (technical and business) and appropriate decision making, techno-economic modelling, and safety principles
- Application of applied thermodynamics modelling, including into process simulations - ASPEN+ or similar
- Skillful use of modelling studies to influence and shape internal experimental and academic programs to deliver improved business outcomes, including operational and design optimisations
- Strong leadership, mentorship and communication skills.
Good to have experiences/skills:
- Prior technology knowledge and practical experience in renewable / low carbon fuels and related larger unit operations. Examples include fixed bed reactors, hydrogen / syngas production, fermentation, biogas production, ethanol production, and carbon-capture.
- Chartered Engineer or equivalent
- Practical, large scale experience in a chemicals, biofuels or refining manufacturing environment.
- Thorough understanding of numerical methods and solution algorithms, and experience of solving challenges with sophisticated process simulation physical property bases
- Physical property estimation and prediction in industrially relevant applications, process and product design, including decarbonisation technologies e.g. modeling of CO2 capture, transport, and storage
- Heat and mass transfer knowledge, and ability to communicate efficiently with the CFD / multi-physics modelling community.
- Travel – up to 25%. Travel between the various locations (in the UK, US, China, and India) and universities (in the UK, India, Continental Europe and the US) may be periodically required.
