Role Synopsis

The Environmental and Social Advisor provides planning, integration, and delivery of environmental and social initiatives within the business, ensuring these activities are resourced, prioritized, and embedded into business plans and governance. The role is the focal point for operationalizing, coordinating Biodiversity, Water and People actions across teams and disciplines, driving measurable progress on our sustainability aims and compliance.

The position is intended to achieve effective, end-to-end delivery of Biodiversity, Water and People initiatives that support business performance, regulatory requirements, and bp’s sustainability ambitions.

Key Accountabilities

  • Lead strategic programs for environmental and social management and integrating sustainability into business processes.
  • Provides technical support related to environment and social to the bp businesses to address environmental and social aspects, impact and opportunities
  • Support the businesses with programmes delivery and implementation that are aligned with bp’s strategy.
  • Support E&S SMEs (air, water, compliance, biodiversity, social and LRMS) to deliver foundational aspects (e.g. GDP 3.6 conformance, compliance management) and sustainability aims objectives for their specific topic areas.
  • Support bp environmental and social management system implementation as part of OMS
  • Support sharing of learnings and implementation of corrective actions leading to continuous improvement
  • Lead delivery of environmental & social assurance activities
  • Mange programme communication for E&S, bringing to life E&S stories to showcase delivery of requirements and the sustainability frame.

Essential Education:

  • Degree in Engineering, Environmental Engineering, Environmental Science, Chemistry, or Environmental-related subject area from an accredited university
  • Must be a member of professional institution relevant to degree, or a Chartered Environmentalist.

Essential Experience and Job Requirements:

  • Strong communication and integration skills. Ability to communicate complex topics to stakeholders across multiple functions.
  • Great technical understanding of business planning and demonstrable experience in environmental and social program management, sustainability requirements and compliance management systems process systems design, and delivery.
  • Experience planning, prioritization and project management skills.
  • Proven ability to integrate work of multi-functional teams
  • Extensive operations experience, as well as significant knowledge of the industry, technology and organizational environment.
  • Working knowledge and experience in implementing ISO 14001 (environmental management systems)
  • Integrate and collaborate with key stakeholders to ensure alignment on programme objectives and deliverables

Desirable criteria

  • At least 10 years relevant Oil and Gas experience - with a demonstrated background in HSSE, sustainability, engineering, or operations.
  • Strong environmental & social expertise and knowledge of E&S practices.
  • Experience with the development and delivery of programmes or plan for an operating oil and gas production facility, refinery, petrochemicals, or other industrial site.
  • Excellent communication skills (written and verbal)
  • Excellent interpersonal and team working skills, able to support or to lead
  • Ability to effectively interface and integrate
  • Able to manage projects from start to completion, including risk management and reporting.
