Early Careers at bp

Looking to turn your career dreams into global impact? Explore graduate opportunities with bp. Here you get to work on challenging projects, learn from experts and mentors, and be part of a high-performing team from the get-go. You get the freedom to think boldly, the licence to innovate and the chance to grow in multiple directions. And you get supported, recognised and rewarded along the way.

Our Internships

Our summer internships are 11 weeks. You’ll be based in one team throughout your internship, working on real projects that you’ll be able to manage through to completion. Throughout you’ll have the support of a dedicated line manager and a buddy from one of our early careers programs.

Alongside your day-to-day responsibilities, you’ll have the opportunity to attend events and socials with other interns, take part in training sessions to help develop your interpersonal skills and network with leaders from across bp. The program is designed to help build your skills and technical knowledge whilst also allowing you to learn more about life at bp.

Role and Responsibilities

The energy industry has a challenge: demand for energy is growing, but we urgently need to reduce the carbon emissions resulting from energy use. Process and Process Safety Engineering (P&PSE) is at the heart of the energy industry, supporting oil and gas production, processing and conversion to create fuels and chemicals, and serving the energy transition in areas such as hydrogen, carbon capture, and green fuels.

P&PSE is involved throughout the lifecycle of major energy projects, from establishing the business case and concept for a new development, through optimisation, design, engineering, construction, commissioning, and operations. We also support developing the innovations that will ensure our future success. And most importantly, we must understand and mitigate the process safety risks arising from our operations.

The precise nature of your role will be defined by the needs of the business, but your duties and responsibilities will include:

  • Apply your chemical engineering skills to solve real-world problems in technology development, projects, or operations

  • Care passionately about the safety of our facilities, and develop the skills needed to constantly seek inherently safer solutions

  • Recognise the risks in the work you are doing and constantly seek ways to mitigate

  • Recognise the environmental impact of the facilities you are working on, and constantly seek ways to reduce

  • Build relationships both within bp and with our external partners

Requirements

  • To apply for this role, you must be in your penultimate year of study (those going onto a Master’s and PhD students can apply), and be on track for a 2:1

  • On track for master’s degree in Chemical, Process or Biochemical Engineering, or a bachelor’s degree in Chemical or Process Engineering supplemented by a post-graduate qualification (masters degree) in a relevant topic such as Advanced Chemical Engineering, Process Safety, Petroleum Engineering, Environmental Engineering, or studies related to sustainability or low carbon energy

  • Be committed to be Scotland based for the duration of the internship and if offered a graduate position you will be offered the location you completed the internship in

  • You are also expected to have strong spoken and written English language skills, including business and technical English. Language skills will be assessed throughout the recruitment process.

  • bp supports our graduates to achieve professional accreditation and become chartered engineers. Therefore, it’s essential that your degree is accredited to MEng (or equivalent) level. To find out if your degree is accredited, please visit the links below. If you don’t find your degree within the links and know it is accredited, then please continue to submit your application and we can confirm this for you.
