Job Description:

Early Careers at bp

Looking to turn your career dreams into global impact? Explore graduate opportunities with bp. Here you get to work on challenging projects, learn from experts and mentors, and be part of a high-performing team from the get-go. You get the freedom to think boldly, the licence to innovate and the chance to grow in multiple directions. And you get supported, recognised and rewarded along the way.

Our Internships

Our summer internships are 11 weeks. You’ll be based in one team throughout your internship, working on real projects that you’ll be able to manage through to completion. Throughout you’ll have the support of a dedicated line manager and a buddy from one of our early careers programs. Alongside your day-to-day responsibilities, you’ll have the opportunity to attend events and socials with other interns, take part in training sessions to help develop your interpersonal skills and network with leaders from across bp. The program is designed to help build your skills and technical knowledge whilst also allowing you to learn more about life at bp.

Role and Responsibilities

Automation includes a range of engineering subdisciplines including instrumentation, process control, safety systems, communications and cyber security. It enables digitally secure, safe, reliable and optimal control of complex energy facilities, which include our oil refineries and biofuels plants, oil and gas production facilities, green and blue hydrogen production, on-shore and off-shore wind, solar and integrated mobility solutions.

The Instrumentation and Control engineer’s job cover a wide range of topics including design and maintenance of:

  • Process Control Systems

  • Safety Instrumented Systems

  • Fire and Gas Systems

  • Field Instrumentation

  • Analyser Systems

  • Metering Systems

  • Telecommunications Systems and Networks

  • Security Systems

  • Automation Systems Cyber Security

All of the above is in support of enhancing safety, optimising production, and improving reliability of our diverse facilities across the globe.

As an Intern you could find yourself:

  • Designing and building process plant control systems, which means incredible variety. One day you could be working out the best way to control a biofuels reactor, the next you could be working on installing an advanced control system (a kind of autopilot) for blue hydrogen production.

  • Working with the latest sensing, measurement & analysis instrument technologies; learning design and application of safety instrumented systems in production, refining, pipelines, carbon capture, hydrogen generation, biofuels and renewable energy facilities

  • Integrating instrument and protection systems for electric vehicles, battery charging and storage systems or working with miniature sensors to develop energy systems integrating wind, solar and green hydrogen energy.

  • Working with the latest wireless technology to support development and use of industrial IoT as we build new energy systems and modernise our legacy operations.

  • Working with an incredibly diverse and distributed team of experienced engineers with a global perspective. Automation touches everything in bp, even our rapid battery charging solutions require cyber secure safe control systems.
