Job Description:
Early Careers Experience at bp
Our summer internships are 10 weeks. You’ll be based in one team throughout your internship, working on real projects that you’ll be able to manage through to completion. Throughout you’ll have the support of a dedicated line manager and a buddy from one of our early careers programs. Alongside your day-to-day responsibilities, you’ll have the opportunity to attend events and socials with other interns, take part in training sessions to help develop your interpersonal skills and network with leaders from across bp. The program is designed to help build your skills and technical knowledge whilst also allowing you to learn more about life at bp.
Role and Responsibilities
For this Summer intern role, we are looking for someone to be part of the Geoscience discipline. Geology is concerned with the application of geological principles and techniques to characterise the Subsurface, describe uncertainty ranges, manage risk, and use large amounts of technical data to inform business decisions.
Geophysics is concerned with the acquisition, processing, interpretation and analysis of seismic and other geophysical datasets (e.g. gravity-magnetic surveys) to create an image of the subsurface.
At bp, our Petrophysicists define the volume and distribution of oil and gas in our reservoirs as well as their flow characteristics
Geology / Geophysics job description:
The energy transition to a net zero future requires geoscientists to play a meaningful role in ensuring we can meet the world’s growing demand for energy while striving for an efficient transition. At bp, our geoscientists use leading-edge technology to develop and deliver low emissions, sustainable energy solutions. This includes exploring for and exploiting hydrocarbons as we continue to diversify supply to lower carbon energy sources like hydrogen, geothermal, renewables, CCUS & bioenergy. The transition is well underway, and its direction is shaped by geological factors, as well as economic, political, technology and societal considerations.
During your internship you’ll get continuous feedback and guidance on how to plan and deliver your project, along with advice on what to look for and who to talk to. You’ll also be encouraged, individually and together with your Intern peer group, to find out as much as possible about other teams, disciplines and operations to broaden your understanding of the bp business.
Here at bp, the combination of geology and geophysics — as geosciences — delivers a powerful description and evaluation of the subsurface, growing our ability to safely deliver hydrocarbons and develop lower carbon energy sources. Join us as a geologist and you’ll find our dedication to today and tomorrow stretches beyond the success of our business, to the development of our people and their successful careers!
Petrophysics job description:
Petrophysicists play a crucial role in our efforts to produce enough oil and gas to help satisfy the world’s growing demand for energy!
At bp, our Petrophysicists define the volume and distribution of oil and gas in our reservoirs as well as their flow characteristics. They investigate the quality of reservoir rocks such as their porosity, permeability and how reservoir fluids interact with the reservoir matrix. This involves the integration of direct measurements of reservoir properties, from core and fluid samples extracted from the reservoir together with data from sophisticated indirect measurements made by logging tools lowered into boreholes. These tools measure the nuclear, electrical and acoustic response of rocks and the integrated results are used to predict the volume and distribution of the hydrocarbons and optimise the methods of extraction.
As a Petrophysicist Summer Intern joining our multi-disciplinary and multicultural subsurface team, you’ll work on our global exploration program, new field developments or at a producing asset - all dynamic, collaborative environments. You’ll interact with geoscientists; reservoir, petroleum and drilling engineers; as well as commercial and other disciplines to turn your evaluations into business decisions and actions.
Displaying bp’s beliefs you’ll become part of an organisation committed to a diverse, energetic and inclusive culture that thrives on open, transparent and constructive feedback. You’ll have good numeracy skills, be dedicated, enthusiastic and committed
Geomechanics / PPFG job description:
The PPFG (Pore Pressure and Fracture Gradient)/Geomechanics summer intern may support Exploration and Development wells in well planning, execution, abandonment through the development of compliant pore and fracture pressure forecasts. They will engage geomechanics specialist support in the use of wellbore strengthening and wellbore stability evaluations, support pressure detection efforts for exploration/appraisal wells where appropriate, evaluate sub-surface related non-productive time (NPT) events into new forecasts.
Duties and responsibilities:
The precise nature of your role and project will be determined by your skills as well as the needs of the business but your responsibilities include:
Working on projects and supporting your team to find the best solutions
Helping to maintain performance within your team and for bp as a company
Building relationships both within bp and with our external partners, collaborating across functions, segments and teams to deliver excellence
Demonstrating drive and dedication through the bp values with an emphasis on safety
As part of bp, you will also be able to take part in additional activities outside of your role, whether it be supporting local community initiatives, our bp Business Resourcing Groups and you are given the encouragement and time to participate.
In addition, demonstrable data science skills would be advantageous for any geoscience candidate applying for a role in bp. Specifically, proficiency in using statistical methods to interrogate large datasets for geological insight, and in the application of using scripting languages such as Python and R, and development environments such as Jupyter and Rstudio.
