Job Description:

The carriage of hydrocarbons by third party vessels represents significant environmental exposure risk to the bp. The purpose of the Vetting & Clearance (V&C) team is to ensure that any vessel employed by bp for carriage of bulk hydrocarbons meet bp’s standards.

As part of the V&C team, you will play a key role in handling bp’s fleet of term charted vessels by assuring that these vessels are operated in a safe and commercially viable manner by their technical managers.

You will provide technical advice to the commercial teams who operate vessels chartered by bp for transportation of bulk hydrocarbons.

You will be an experienced maritime professional who can build meaningful and effective relationships with third party managers, industry bodies and internal partners. You will employ those relationships to generate transparent conversations, drive performance improvement, and provide technical advice to bp’s commercial teams.

You will also be responsible for providing assurance for marine related activities, by performing any combination of routine marine assurance assessments, self-verification of vetting and clearance reviews and providing ad-hoc marine advice and support.

Key Accountabilities

  • Reporting to the Senior Manager - Operations & Performance, the Operations & Performance superintendent will act as post fixture point of contact for designated time charter, high use, COA vessels and any assigned technical managers. The responsibility and accountabilities of the role will extend globally across the bp portfolio of shipping partners providing vessels for hydrocarbon transportation.

  • Support the V&C LT, commercial teams and internal partners in ensuring consistent application of all marine activity policies and procedures and provide guidance to BP businesses to ensure similar implementation.

  • Provide marine activity advice and support to all collaborators that move hydrocarbons in bulk on the water, including bp Entities, ship owners and technical managers of time charter, high use and COA vessels, and industry bodies.

  • Support the V&C LT in developing, recommending and monitoring suitable performance matrix metrics to identify leading indicators of any post fixture performance degradation of time charter, high use, COA vessels or any technical managers identified by V&C LT.

  • Collaborate with V&C and Commercial teams to intervene as needed with technical managers in the delivery of expeditious quality resolutions following adverse HSE incidents and/or operational performance aboard time chartered, high use or COA vessels. This may include deep dive assessments of technical managers and ship ride visits of vessels on bp business.

  • Develop and oversee the execution of a technical manager performance improvement plan in alignment with BP Charter Party HSE and Vetting Clause as directed by V&C LT.

  • Contribute towards the maintenance of the Assurance System database and other relevant data sources to ensure accurate and current information and complete UAT testing of new vetting database releases when requested.

  • Support V&C LT, Partners and Project LT and Head of Commercial as required to exercise owner’s responsibilities for bp bareboat chartered; owned third party managed vessels and barges.

  • Conduct vetting and clearance activities, including assessment, screening and clearance of oil, gas, chemical and dry bulk vessels and terminals on an as needed basis in support of the V&C Team.

  • Participate in the bp Shipping Incident Management Team and / or Business Support Team which follows the ICS model.

Essential Education

  • Class II/2 or III/2 (Master Mariner or Chief Engineer) and experience as Master/Chief Officer or Chief Engineer/ 2nd Engineer on board oil, gas or chemical tankers or

  • Equivalent professional marine qualification/experience with a shipping background including considerable experience in the management of ship operations.

Essential Experience /Job Requirements

  • Deep technical marine operations experience.

  • The ability to identify and deliver business change in complex and challenging environment

  • Knowledge of OCIMF inc SIRE,TMSA & Marine Terminal Baseline criteria

  • Knowledge of risk assessment techniques

  • Knowledge of Shipping Commercial terms and charter parties.

  • Relationship Building, influencing skills and able to have courageous conversations.

  • Vetting and clearance experience
