Role Synopsis
The Senior Drilling Engineer (SDE) will be responsible for engineering activities to efficiently design, plan, and support execution of wells in Brazil in accordance with all local laws and conforming to all bp practices. The SDE will need to work with a multi-disciplinary and international team to ensure safe delivery of all business objectives for the wells. This will include, but is not limited to, addressing safety and/or operational risks, progressing engineering work and procedures through assurance steps, providing engineering support to the Wells Superintendent (WSUP), and supporting less experienced staff with coaching and mentoring.
Essential Role Requirements
Experience: Significant drilling engineering experience, prefer sufficient experience in deepwater with an operator. Experience working within, and preferably supervising, multi-disciplinary teams.
Qualifications: Excellent communication skills with the ability to communicate at all levels to efficiently project handle multi-disciplinary scopes of work.
Valid Well Control Certificate (WellSharp or IWCF)
BOSIET or HUET training for locations that require helicopter for transit to the Wellsite.
Education: Bachelor in an Engineering field or higher.
Fluent in English. Fluent in Portuguese.
Key Accountabilities & Responsibilities
In this role the SDE will:
- Provide engineering experience and expertise needed for well design, well planning, and preparation of wells programs that safely and compliantly conform to well objectives, leading these activities through the vital assurance. Examples may include tubular design, cementing and fluids design, well placement design, AFE preparation, risk register management, equipment readiness, program readiness, etc.
- Support the WSUP and Operations Team before and during the execution of well by delivering high level drilling engineering leadership, support, and assurance.
- Provides leadership for the day-to-day management of Drilling operations and is accountable to support aspects of performance (HSSE, People Agenda and Financial Delivery), from planning to implementation and assurance.
- Continually reviews drilling operations performance, identifying and sharing lessons learned and leading continuous improvement in performance and process optimisation, in alignment with the function's practices and policies
- Proactively identifies and shares global and local takeaways through close collaborative relationships with key internal partners and develops themes/trends from issues and incidents, whilst ensuring related lessons are assembled and codified into standards and technical practices.
- Identify, mitigate, document, and properly convey wells safety risks to key partners successfully. This may include HAZOPs, Risk Assessments, MOCs, etc.
- Provide engineering expertise to support key interested parties in Subsurface, Projects, Finance, Vendors, and the Regional collaborators.

Key Relationships
The Senior Drilling Engineer will be part of the P&O Wells Team Organization working for the Regions Group (Brazil). The SDE will collaborate with the Discipline Lead (alternatively called Engineering Team Lead) and work closely with other members of the engineering team for Brazil. The SDE will also need to cultivate relationships with the Operations Team, contractors and well service personnel in the office/field. Other key relationships include well planning service providers, PSCM/Logistics for supplies and personnel, the Exploration/New Well Delivery team, Completions Engineering, Well Test Team, Interventions, and Integrity teams. The current drilling engineering team is based out of Houston and London. Other key collaborators in Houston are a large part of the Brazilian subsurface team and some members of the finance, logistics, and procurement teams. The Wells Operations team is based out of Rio de Janeiro (Rio). Also based in Rio are the majority of the finance, procurement, and logistics teams, and key operational subsurface roles.
Desirable Criteria & Qualifications:
- Experience constructing exploration/appraisal/development wells in Brasil
- Significant drilling engineering experience, prefer sufficient experience in deepwater with an operator.
