Let me tell you about the role

Lead the delivery of high-quality operational insights across bp’s UK fuel retail business. Accountable for shaping the retail operations data strategy, ensuring robust performance reporting, and enabling data-driven decision-making that improves efficiency, compliance, and customer experience. Responsible for effectively supporting and challenging the UK retail operations team in minimising risk, maximising performance and delivering our strategy. Lead a small team of analysts and act as the key link between operational customers and bp’s wider analytics community. This role will need to successfully support consistent delivery whilst the business navigates change and growth

What you will deliver

Lead and develop a high-performing analytics team, fostering a data-driven and customer-focused culture.
Own the reporting and insights roadmap, ensuring alignment with business priorities and bp’s data strategy. Champion data-driven decision-making and challenge the status quo to drive innovation.
Design and deliver scalable reporting frameworks and clear KPIs for retail operations.
Translate complex data into actionable insights for senior leaders and operational teams, highlighting risks and opportunities.
Partner with Retail Operations leadership and collaborate across Finance, Marketing, Trading, HSSE, and Assets for integrated, customer-led solutions.
Guide the team and customers through periods of change, ensuring stability and adaptability.

Tailor data and insights to the needs of end-users, ensuring recommendations drive customer experience and strategic priorities.
Present analysis clearly to both technical and non-technical audiences.
Ensure data integrity, governance, and compliance with bp standards and in close collaboration with bp enabling functions like Technology and Marketing
Continuously improve reporting processes, leveraging automation and best practices.
Utilise external data sources and market trends to inform strategy.
Build strong relationships with internal and external customers.
Support business growth through presentations, digital content, and operational expertise.
Conduct store and field visits to understand operational context and customer impact.
Provide leadership and support in critical situations.
Undertake any other reasonable duties as required.

What you will need to be successful

Education:

  • Degree or equivalent experience preferable

Experience and Job Requirements

  • Proven experience in data-led roles within fast-paced retail or FMCG environments, ideally managing analytics in large, complex organisations.

  • Strong technical expertise in Power BI (data modelling, DAX, dashboard design), Excel (advanced functionality, Power Query), and familiarity with SQL or similar query tools.

  • Demonstrated ability to translate operational requirements into effective, actionable data solutions.

  • Track record of leading, motivating, and developing high-performing teams or technical analysts.

  • Highly organised, with strong planning, prioritisation, and attention to detail; comfortable handling and interpreting large datasets.

  • Commercially minded, with a clear understanding of how data improves efficiency, compliance, and customer experience.

  • Excellent customer management and communication skills, able to influence senior leaders and engage across all levels.

  • Ability to challenge the status quo, drive innovation, and support the business through change and transformation.

  • Self-motivated, resilient under pressure, and committed to continuous improvement and excellence.

  • Ability to balance critical thinking with pragmatic problem-solving and proactive/reactive leadership.

Desirable Criteria
Knowledge of roadside retail industry and experience in field, store, or central support roles.

Familiarity with Lean, Continuous Improvement, or Agile methodologies.
Understanding of data governance frameworks and regulatory compliance (GDPR).
Experience in cross-functional programmes, especially those involving digital transformation or automation.

As Data and Insight Lead, you will join the Retail Programme, Data and Insight Team and will lead a high-performing team of analysts dedicated to supporting bp’s UK Retail Operations. Key Stakeholders will be:

Retail Operations leadership and frontline managers
UK Retail functional teams (HSSE, Assets, Convenience, Marketing), bp enabling functions (Technology, P&C), External partner and technology vendors.
