Role Synopsis:
We are seeking an experienced Front-End Process Engineer (Development Engineer) to join the Engineering & Quality team within Projects India organization. This role supports early-stage development of major projects across bp’s Upstream Oil & Gas portfolios.
The Front-End Process Engineer (Development Engineer) will lead and contribute to engineering work during FEL 1 (Appraise) and FEL 2A/2B (Concept Development & Optimise) phases - developing conceptual solutions, managing contractor-led studies, and supporting the evaluation of safe, competitive, and compliant development options. The role requires strong technical judgment, cross-discipline collaboration, and the ability to influence project direction through early-phase insight.
The position is based in Pune, with occasional travel to contractor offices in India and internationally.
What you will deliver
- Define and deliver front-end engineering assessments and studies during FEL 1 (Appraise), FEL 2A (Concept Development) and FEL 2B (Optimise/ Pre-FEED) phases of projects - to the right quality, on schedule and within budget.
- Facilitate technical integration and interfacing across disciplines, including subsurface, wells, engineering and commercial.
- Provide expertise in facilities design, including Process Safety (e.g. ISD reviews, MAR studies, HAZIDS, Preliminary HAZOPS), technology selection, application of BP Technical Standards (ETPs) and industry standards, optimization of options, Engineering for Value/ VIPs, commissioning and operations readiness.
- Embed integrity management and HSSE requirements from the outset.
- Work with Senior Engineers to set clear direction, performance manage Engineering Contractors, and review key engineering deliverables, such as Basis of Design (BoD), Basis of Limitations (BoL), Technology Plan, Design reports, drawings and datasheets, Design Hazard Management Plan and core process safety documentation.
- Provide engineering input to Decision Quality, risk assessments, procurement strategies, and project verification and assurance reviews.
- Support front-end loading and appraisal management activities aligned with BP’s staged-gate framework.
- Quality check and grow existing data sets used to benchmark concepts
What you will need to be successful
Must have educational qualifications:
- Bachelor’s Degree in Chemical Engineering or equivalent.
Preferred education/certifications:
- Chartered Engineer or Registered Professional Engineer
Minimum years of relevant experience:
- 7-12 years’ experience of engineering work in Oil & Gas major projects and production operations.
- Minimum 5 years of front-end engineering experience in upstream capital projects, specifically in FEL 1 (Appraise), FEL 2A (Concept Development), and FEL 2B (Optimise/Pre-FEED) phases – gained with Oil & Gas Operators or Front-End Engineering Contractors, or Consultants.
Must have experiences/skills (To be hired with):
- Proven expertise in front-end project development and process engineering, including feasibility, concept selection, and optimisation.
- Strong technical foundation in a core engineering discipline (process engineering, or a related front-end field), with hands-on experience in Process Safety (e.g. ISD, HAZID, Preliminary HAZOPs, MARs) and with process design and simulation tools (e.g. HYSYS, PipeSim, ProII, OLGA).
- Demonstrated ability to deliver integrated engineering solutions across multidisciplinary teams (subsurface, wells, brownfield, operations, HSSE, commercial, PSCM).
- Experience spanning multiple project stages, combining technical depth, leadership, and commercial awareness.
- Skilled in identifying, managing, and clearly communicating risks and opportunities.
- Strong communication and influencing skills.
- Proven ability to foster collaboration across geographically distributed teams.
- Self-motivated learner with the ability to quickly acquire new skills.
Good to have experiences/skills (Can be trained for – learning/on-the-job):
- Broad understanding of upstream Oil & Gas operations—subsurface, wells, facilities, and commercial.
- Ability to balance big-picture thinking with attention to technical detail.
- Familiarity with international energy company engineering practices and industry standards.
- Understanding of commercial and economic drivers in project development.
- Awareness of major project delivery processes and governance models used by global energy companies.
