Job Description:

The Principal Mechanical Engineer position is an experienced, equipment focused reliability engineer within the Engineering and Technical Services Department. The objectives of the role are to provide technical support and reliability leadership to the refinery asset teams and supporting departments. This includes technical assurance, strategy maintenance, and tactical actions for a class of equipment. The role is a member of the Reliability Engineering team and will provide input to medium to long-term equipment strategies. The Principal Mechanical Engineer also may represent the Asset or Maintenance Teams regarding any significant capital investment decisions, risk assessments, TAR plans, and/or major project assurance. They will function as a leader and mentor to new engineers joining the team and interface daily with the area asset teams, as well as various members of the central engineering groups/SME’s.

Responsibilities

  • This role is the equipment class owner and practicing subject matter expert for valves, piping, and mechanical protective devices at the Whiting Refinery.
  • Responsible for the strategy and performance of the equipment class as it relates to asset reliability and compliance
  • Owns and maintains design specifications and associated reviews/approvals for the equipment class
  • Accountable for accepting and/or developing equipment/maintenance strategies and associated revisions as well as reporting on the compliance/performance related to bp and regulatory requirements
  • Interfaces regularly with bp’s engineering advisors and is an active participant in delivering central initiatives to the site
  • Expected to maintain a high level of engineering integrity with all recommendations and decisions while performing the various work process tasks: MOC’s, Barrier Health Assurance, RCA, Variances, Deferrals, Design Reviews, Investigations, etc…
  • Responsible for the maintenance of the BP Whiting VR Stamp QC
  • Technical Contact for PSV’s
  • Valve Related Activities
  • Technical Contact for Piping

Requirements

  • Bachelor’s Degree in Mechanical Engineering or similar experience
  • 7+ years of relevant experience; knowledge and experience relevant to refinery equipment

Preferred

  • Professional Engineering License
