About bp

The bp Technical Solutions India (TSI) centre in Pune aims to build on bp’s existing engineering and technical strengths, to deliver high quality services to its hydrocarbons and new energy businesses worldwide. TSI brings together diverse engineering capability to provide technical services across a range of areas including engineering, maintenance, optimization, data processes, projects and subsurface, to deliver safe, affordable and lower emission energy, while continuously innovating how we work. Global Subsurface Solutions (GSS) delivers high-quality, high impact, subsurface technical products to address prioritised business challenges across bp’s Production and Operations (P&O) organisation.

About the Role

The GSS Senior Petrophysicist role spans exploration, development, and production / injection of hydrocarbon and CCUS reservoirs across the global portfolio. You may be involved in well planning, data acquisition and interpretation of petrophysical well data, both in new drill wells and well intervention/surveillance scenarios. You could be responsible for multi-well field studies to derive static and dynamic reservoir properties suitable for geological modelling and reservoir simulation. You may work clastic, deep-water, paralic, non-marine and carbonate reservoirs, supporting both oil and gas, as well as low carbon portfolios.

You will be deployed into multi-disciplinary squads to provide technical skills in petrophysics and subsurface integration, along with thorough insight into subsurface uncertainty and risk. This delivery requires effective collaboration and communication with other subsurface team members, and an ability to communicate subsurface uncertainties and risks within cross-discipline teams (drilling and completions, production operations, finance and other related groups).

What you will deliver

  • As an individual technical contributor, you will deliver high quality petrophysical analysis whilst integrating with geological and engineering data to build subsurface descriptions which underpin exploration and field development across the global portfolio.

  • Your technical and business skills will enable you to develop appropriate subsurface scenarios, to characterise and communicate subsurface uncertainties and use this knowledge to plan and deliver ‘fit for purpose’ technical products.

  • Your ability to clearly communicate subsurface uncertainty to colleagues and business leaders (including cross-functionally), will enable the development of appropriate risk management and mitigation plans.

  • You will promote bp's commitment to safe, responsible and sustained performance, and demonstrate strong individual and leadership behaviours in line with bp values.

  • As a Senior Petrophysicist in bp’s subsurface technical community, you will coach and mentor, share best practice and seek to innovate to solve technical and business challenges.

Must have qualifications:

  • Advanced Degree (MA, MSc or PhD) in geology, geophysics, reservoir engineering, or other relevant science based curriculum.

Minimum years of relevant experience:

  • 12 years of relevant petrophysics' experience in an integrated oil and gas company, working in exploration, field appraisal, development, production or well planning.

Must have experiences/skills:

  • Highly proficient in a well log interpretation package, ideally Techlog and Petrel.

  • Experience with (and understanding of) most cased and open hole logging tools and interpretation methods, including advanced logs such as image logs, NMR, tri-axial resistivity, formation pressures, fluid sample acquisition and analysis.

  • Knowledge of reservoir quality from core including routine core analysis, petrography, mercury injection data, grain size analysis, relative permeability etc.

  • The ability to construct a rock type description to match to, and predict from, log-based measurements.

  • Experience with construction of petrophysical models and facies schemes appropriate for geological model building. A track record of strong multi-disciplinary communication needed to deliver static models and understand their dynamic behaviour.

  • Skilled in characterising and communicating subsurface uncertainty, risk and value.

  • A demonstrable commitment to data and knowledge management, proactive sharing of best practices and technical skills across multiple disciplines and teams.

  • Complies with bp’s Code of Conduct and models bp’s Values & Behaviours.

  • Highly collaborative, team-first ethos, and a proven track-record of delivery.

  • A self-starter driven to take on a senior role in a technical team, helping to drive and deliver the work programme.

  • Ability to support multiple work fronts concurrently, prioritising delivery appropriately.

  • Desire to develop and learn new skills.

  • Strong written and oral communication skills in English.

Good to have experiences/skills:

  • Experience across the field life cycle, including exploration, appraisal, development, production and decline/ abandonment.

  • Well planning experience

  • Experience across multiple basins, geological environments, lithologies.

  • International experience.

  • Experience working in diverse global teams, and in managing stakeholders.

  • Familiarity with agile working practices.

You will work with

Your line manager will be the Petrophysics Discipline Leader supporting the TSI Unit within GSS.

You will be based in Pune, India, but may be deployed remotely into a multinational, integrated subsurface delivery ‘squad’ where day-to-day activities/deliverables will be prioritised by the squad leader. These GSS squads typically consist of 5-10 multi-disciplinary technical members in several locations and are deployed based on global subsurface business prioritisation. You will also work in close collaboration with other subsurface teams from locations your squad is supporting, as well as with global subsurface technical specialists and subject matter experts.
