About the role
Digital transformation at pace and scale is a critical enabler of bp’s strategy.
The digital transformation lead is a high-impact, specialist SME role responsible for working with colleagues from across bp to plan and implement the digital strategy for refining, terminals, and pipelines globally. The purpose of the role is to deliver significant cost reductions and efficiencies through digital solutions; to maximise the overall competitiveness of bp’s global refining portfolio.
Key Accountabilities
- Work multiple bp teams, specifically group technology and bp solutions, to develop a deep understanding of bp’s digital strategy and to represent the views and requirements of bp’s refineries.
- Leverage a working understanding of refining architecture and technical specifications to define the application of digital tools to the portfolio, including digital twins, AI, and ERP.
- Lead the implementation of relevant digital tools to enhance efficiency and effectiveness of work processes, access and use of data / data mining, and overall competitiveness of our sites.
- Partner with ERP implementation team to optimize scope and ensure successful launch according to the pre-agreed timeline.
- Act as the SME / advisor to the SVP refining and their leadership team on digital topics.
- Plan, project manage and assure complex digital implementation programmes.
- Propose a refining digital twin strategy, leveraging learnings from other parts of the organization.

- High levels of complexity and ambiguity.
- A global portfolio with varying requirements, legislation, and challenges.
- Influencing the bp digital strategy without direct accountability
- Competing priorities will require exceptional project planning and project management expertise.
- Refining is a safety critical business. Changes must be robust and well planned to ensure that safe, reliable, and compliant operations are not compromised.
Essential Requirements
- Degree educated (likely in a technical/engineering field), preferably with postgraduate qualifications (e.g. MBA) and qualification in a digital / technological field.
- 10-15 years post-graduation experience gained in refining or other heavy industry / manufacturing.
- Deep experience of leading multi-site digital transformation projects or other heavy industry / manufacturing.
- Experience of integrating ERP, digital twins and AI agents into the digital solution for sites
- Previous experience will include technical and operational roles in refineries.
- Proven ability to plan, lead, and govern complex, large-scale projects.
- Deep understanding of AI and its role in driving efficiency and competitiveness.
- Strong leadership and relationship skills (followership, EQ, influencing without direct authority)
- Ideally will have gained experience by working in different countries and cultures.
- Experience of implementing digital solutions in highly complex, unionized/represented sites would be a distinct advantage.
